1. Arrive at each lesson punctually, well-prepared, with your assignment and all music, even if no assignment was given in that book at the prior lesson.
2. Keep a pencil in your binder for making notes on your music and assignment sheets.
3. Manage your time wisely. If there is no time to practice, but there is time to watch TV, talk on the phone, text, be on the internet, attend sporting and social events, then music study is not being taking seriously and progress will be compromised.
4. In order to get the most out of your lesson time, daily quality practice is essential. You will receive the greatest benefit from lessons by practicing at least 5 days each week. Make every effort to practice IMMEDIATELY following a lesson as this is the BEST way to retain fresh instruction.
Practice should be goal-oriented, that is, you should aim for results rather than simply spending a certain amount of time practicing. I want you to completely understand every assignment, so please ask questions!
Please do not think that if you haven’t practiced, that you shouldn’t come to your lesson. There is always something we can do, even if you’ve had a “bad” week.
I will spend a significant part of each lesson teaching you how to practice. You will get the best results from practicing by using a step-by-step, goal-oriented approach. Each week I will give you an assignment sheet describing what and how you should practice so that you can make as much progress as possible during each practice session and SPEND THE LEAST AMOUNT OF TIME PRACTICING!
The study of music is rewarding and enjoyable, but it is also work. You get out of it what you put into it!
